JANUARY 29, 2007, KINGSTON JAMAICA Digicel, the fastest-growing mobile telecommunications company in the Caribbean and new entrant to the Central American market, has launched in Jamaica the Digicel Mobile TV service, powered by Vimio Plc. Now available to Digicel’s post-paid and pre-paid customers in Jamaica, the highly-anticipated service was unveiled on Thursday (Jan 25th) with a live demonstration at the popular Digicel sponsored Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival.

Offered on Jamaica’s most reliable and widest GSM/GPRS network, Digicel is the first mobile operator in the country to offer all live, all local mobile TV programming. The Caribbean company has plans in place to expand its mobile TV offering across its network of 22 markets later this year in addition to including ‘made for mobile’ channels, which will feature regularly updated blocks of programming and live TV streaming.

Digicel Jamaica’s customers can enjoy around-the-clock live local programming, including well-loved soap operas, news bulletins, music videos and sports programs, thanks to Digicel’s partnership with Jamaica’s national station, CVM TV and the country’s leading music channel, Hype TV.

Accessible on a wide range of top brand Nokia and Sony Ericsson GPRS enabled handsets with additional handsets to be announced shortly, customers can easily access the service by simply selecting the Mobile TV link within the mobile content service Digicel Live on their handset.

“In order to provide our customers with an excellent and valued TV experience, it was important that we provide local TV content. Mobile television is a great example of the exciting innovative services we’re able to offer with our world-class GSM/GPRS network,” said Ralf Ohlhausen, Group Products Director at Digicel.

Digicel customers can also roam with the service in more than 50 countries, allowing them to stay up-to-date with their local TV programs when traveling. The service is charged on a per second basis whether accessing the service at home or abroad.

Ronnie Sutherland, Director of Sponsorship at CVM TV says, “Digicel is one of the most the most innovative and admired brands in Jamaica so we are thrilled to extend our relationship with them. As a national TV station, we always strive to be the ones to get information out there first and the fastest. To that end, the idea of live broadcasting to the mobile handsets through Digicel TV is a fantastic proposition, delivering local news, sport updates and entertainment wherever and whenever people want it.”

Johann Dawes, Managing Director of HYPE TV adds, “By offering this service, Digicel is once again playing an important role in supporting the promotion of Caribbean talent and entertainment”.
