The green light has been given for a second mobile services provider to begin providing telecommunication service to the Bahamian public.

The 15 year licenses will be awarded to Cable Bahamas Limited (CBL) and government partnership, New Co, after the final formalities of the licensing process have been completed.

According to the Bahamas’ Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA), on October 18, 2015, the Cellular Liberalization Task Force announced that CBL emerged as the successful bidder of the cellular mobile selection process, having obtained the higher score of the two bidders that participated in the spectrum auction.

The Task Force then commenced discussions with CBL regarding the ownership arrangement that was stipulated in the Request for Proposals.

According to the government, it holds a majority equity ownership interest on behalf of the general public. It says discussions led to the conclusion of the shareholders agreement that will govern the relationship between CBL and HoldingCo, the entity that will hold the majority equity ownership interest (51.75 percent) in NewCo on behalf of the Bahamian public.

It says its shareholding in Holding Co will be temporary, pending an offering of shasres in Holding Co to institutional investors.
