Smart Mobile Solutions (SMS) launched its impressive and extensive suite of products and services on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at the Jamaica Pegasus’ Talk of the Town in Kingston Jamaica, to prominent business leaders, executives and dignitaries, who witnessed the unfolding of the outstanding journey and evolution of the company, guided with a novel unfolding by the gracious and talented Master of Ceremonies, Paula Ann Porter Jones along with her Co-Host and interviewee being the Co-Founder and Managing Director of the company, Dane Spencer; who took the audience through the phenomenal history of the company.

One of the dynamic duo, Dane Spencer, who started the company with his co-founder Marlon Hudson in 2008, divulged the genesis of their success story “…Smart Mobile Solutions (SMS) came about as a reaction to a circumstance that myself and Marlon were in and we were faced with a challenge we had to fix as IT professionals and of course, we generated an idea from research and the discovery of accessories that were not readily available on the market…”

They capitalized on the opportunity presented, that was supplying Blackberry accessories, and based on the high demand, moved from selling out of their duffel bags and car trunk into a physical space. This brought structure to the company which then evolved into the software space with the development of a pioneer premier blackberry app tracking platform product.. Broad Axxe. This app converted the Blackberry device into a Blackberry panic button that became a transponder which would provide GPS locations. This was introduced to the market and utilized by a prominent Jamaican Security company, and thereafter came the introduction to the wider Caribbean market, propelling the vast growth of the company, with the building of other blackberry apps, expanding into cross platforms and digital labs.

Dane further marveled his distinguished guests with the continued compelling SMS story, highlighting that, in addition to the phenomenal growth of being one of the largest local distributors of mobile devices & accessories, they also added the provision of Repairs and other IT services. They have now further expanded offerings of SMS to include Mobile Device Management, Customized Software Solutions, provider of ICT equipment and are making strides to increase their reach regionally and globally, with their Miami operations. With over 200 clients and a customer base in excess of 14,000, they are the first and only full-service Technology solutions support unit in Jamaica, offering such a wide range of hardware and software solutions, and is the sole vendor of mobile handset protection plans in the Caribbean (Smart Protect), which has been driven by innovation and productivity.

Dane emphasized another new game changing product of the company, Devices As A Service (DaaS).

He explained ‘…This is actually how we bring everything together, Technical Services, Software Studio creating Solutions for customers, and we are also talking about our Commodities and how we support them, manage them and implement them. When we put all these combined solutions together, the key element is to package them almost like an all-inclusive package. We are doing this to shape and revolutionize the use of technology. What we are trying to accomplish is to allow for the consumer, whether it be a business, government entity or an individual, to be able to consume these devices in a way that you acquire them by paying a monthly fee, and you are able to trade in these devices, obtain a rebate on your new devices and reduce your costs of ownership over time. This will keep you connected with the latest technology, so even if you acquired these devices and you realize they are not suitable, you will be able to trade them in, acquire new devices and enter a new payment cycle…Now this is Devices as a Service…What more can I say..’

‘…At this point what we really want to highlight and drive home with this marque product, is that we structured these solutions for our customers in different ways. I am happy to be here because frankly, I just thought you sold tablets and phones, but it is important that you are doing the development of software. In Jamaica, we have been consumers of the technology, we need to become producers of the technology and you have shifted to that, you have demonstrated that you can find solutions to problems here in Jamaica. Same problems exist in the Caribbean and other parts of the world, so you can earn foreign exchange, so you can grow your business, that is what the country needs. You have taken those ideas and built your business around that and I want to congratulate both of you and the Team around you for the success that you have demonstrated, that you can achieve it.

There is no journey that doesn’t have its hurdles as you have indicated, but you have persevered and built and so I look forward to your continued growth and expansion…I remember the blackberry days, but we have evolved and we have grown, and the AI which is going to be the next industrial revolution, has lots of opportunities and threats as well, but it is important for us as a country to take advantage of it. It can improve productivity; it can enhance business and that’s what we have to do. Commendation to SMS, continue to grow, continue to demonstrate that success can lay with young Jamaican Entrepreneurs that have ideas and can convert it and we certainly welcome it…’

The use of smart technology is necessary for increasing our productivity. We are going to make sure that technology will help us to meet international demand and driving Jamaica’s global competitiveness. Until we get those right, we are not going to be the kind of country that we must be. The use of smart technology helps to streamline processes, automate task and optimize resources and allocation across industries. This administration recognizes the vital role of Technology and is committed to Jamaica’s digital transformation. The EU and Government of Jamaica has launched a Euro$9.5M digital transformation programme for Jamaica called Digital Jamaica. Grant funding means that tax payers in another country sees it worthwhile to spend their money in another country and help us to build what we have to build and I am in agreement with and I am committed to working with our agencies in collaboration with the ministries and the private sector in driving our nation’s digital agenda.

It is indeed my pleasure in joining SMS with the launching of its Smart Tech 360 includes coding and the creation of software and technology. We have to see big companies working with smaller ones to make them stronger. These guys started with a knapsack and car trunk and 70 square feet of space to start a company. Advantage General needed the service and got these two young guys to work with them. I want big companies in Jamaica to recognize that we have excellent ICT companies and other companies that can provide the services for them here in Jamaica.

Continue to invest in Jamaica and build your company in Jamaica. We have such a fantastic relationship with Guyana, we have paid them respect over the years, we have three million people, they have 780,000 people. Jamaica has a stock market that works, we have a system that works and so Jamaicans must form a consistent and symbiotic relationship with Guyana to make sure as that their economy grow on the bank of 11 billion barrels of oil declared and as Surinam grows its economy with 1 billion barrels of oil declared, Jamaica grows with these companies…and between now and then there is a lot of business to be done…go and find partners…get together and form a consortium. One of the best inventions of Western Capitalism is The Limited Liability Company. Focus on making sure that we build great business relationships with Guyana.

I am so pleased to see what SMS has done and they had 40 government contracts…and for SMS to get 40 different government contacts it something to applaud them for as it is not easy to get that done. So, I am happy to see what these guys are doing. We have productive relief for business…Productivity is what SMS is about and in Jamaica we are low on productivity and we can do it. SMS is doing it and are doing well at it…”

A supply chain leader’s take on how weak governance, poor integration, and reactive leadership cost Jamaica Broilers billions, and what Caribbean firms must do differently.

As a Jamaican-born supply chain executive working in the United States, I’ve seen firsthand how ambition without execution can quickly become a liability. That’s exactly what happened to Jamaica Broilers Group Limited. For nearly 70 years, JBG has been a symbol of Caribbean manufacturing excellence. However, in early 2025, the company announced its first quarterly loss in history, primarily driven by a $1.15 billion loss from its U.S. operations.

Recent news articles suggest that miscalculations in valuing inventory and biological assets contributed to financial losses. As a leader in operations, financial transformation, and supply chain audits, I can state:

This was not just a financial mistake. It was a strategic failure of systems, governance, and business leadership.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Based on regulatory filings and media reports from Our Today and the Jamaica Observer, here’s what went wrong:

  • JBG admitted to using “unsubstantiated accounting valuation methodologies” affecting inventories and biological assets
  • The company expects a material restatement of U.S. earnings
  • It recorded a J$1.15 billion quarterly loss, compared to a J$1.3 billion profit the year before
  • U.S. operating profit fell from J$2.98 billion to J$922 million over nine months
  • The entire U.S. leadership team was removed, including Stephen Levy, the CEO’s brother
  • External financial advisors were brought in, and reports were delayed twice before being released

This wasn’t an isolated oversight. It was a total breakdown in the systems that connect supply chain performance to financial truth.

Where the Strategy Failed

1. Operations and Finance Were Completely Disconnected

JBG’s misstatement of inventory and biological assets tells me one thing: Finance was not operating with real-time data from the supply chain. In an asset-heavy industry like poultry, valuation accuracy is directly tied to production yields, biological input tracking, and inventory turnover. If those systems are disconnected, your balance sheet is based on assumptions.

Insight: You can’t fix what you can’t see. Real-time inventory visibility is no longer optional, especially in a low-margin industry.

2. Governance Was Passive, Not Proactive

The issues in the U.S. operation were only uncovered during a quarterly review. This means that for months, the leadership based in Jamaica had no visibility into what was truly occurring. There were no warning signs, no escalation triggers, and no governance frameworks in place to identify these missteps earlier.

Insight: Foreign subsidiaries must be governed as extensions of the enterprise, not as independent silos. Operational governance is not a meeting, it is a system.

3. No Strategic Positioning in the U.S. Market

JBG tried to enter the U.S. poultry market as a mainstream player. No diaspora segmentation. No culturally driven SKUs. No unique value proposition. That meant they were competing directly with industry giants like Tyson Foods and Sanderson Farms, with no brand edge or pricing power.

Insight: In the U.S., don’t compete on commodity. Compete on culture, value, and customer alignment. JBG ignored the Caribbean diaspora, and with it, a major advantage.

4. Overexpansion Without Standardization

JBG operated two facilities in the United States, located in Iowa and South Carolina, without a unified operational model. The systems were not standardized, and the processes were not synchronized. The resulting consequences were significant.

  • Ballooning operating expenses
  • Fragmented performance metrics
  • Reduced supply chain efficiency

Insight: Expansion is not growth unless it is built on a repeatable model. Two facilities without one process is not scale, it is confusion.

What They Still Haven’t Fixed

Despite public admissions and leadership changes, JBG has not yet addressed:

  • Whether it will consolidate operations under a single facility
  • How will it implement diaspora-driven branding and product segmentation
  • What new controls are being put in place for real-time operational audits
  • How will its ERP or financial reporting systems be upgraded

The response remains focused on personnel. But this was never just a people problem. It was a process problem.

My Recommendations for Caribbean Firms Entering the U.S.

As someone who has optimized supply chains, here is what I recommend:

1. Integrate ERP Systems Across All Operational Units

Ensure that inventory data, production yields, and cost accounting are aligned and communicate effectively with one another daily.

2. Establish Governance With Clear Escalation Protocols

Don’t wait for quarterly reports. Build monthly audits, early-warning triggers, and local compliance reviews into your operations.

3. Build With Culture at the Center

Diaspora markets are not just nostalgic, they are loyal. Own that connection with specialized SKUs and targeted marketing.

4. Standardize Before You Scale

Replicate only what works. Make sure your first location operates with precision before opening a second.

5. Tell the Truth Sooner

Market trust is built on clarity. Communicate failures transparently, and show the systems being built to prevent recurrence.

I’m not writing this to criticize JBG. I share this because I’ve witnessed this narrative repeatedly. This was a billion-dollar lesson, highlighting the need for Caribbean businesses to prioritize operational discipline over mere optimism when expanding into the U.S.

Financial breakdowns start as operational blind spots. Visibility isn’t a luxury—it’s the foundation of trust.

Market Saturation – A Key Challenge Of The Subscription Revenue Model

This perspective highlights a key challenge of the subscription revenue model—that of market saturation. Since subscription-based businesses rely on a recurring customer base, their revenue growth is often tied to acquiring new subscribers or increasing prices for existing ones. When the market becomes saturated (i.e., most of the potential customers who would subscribe have already done so), companies are forced to find alternative ways to boost revenue, such as:

Studies consistently show that most strategic plans fall short.

The reasons are varied, but a common mistake stands out: teams often assume they understand “strategic” planning, only to end up misguided, compromising their organizations’ success. Often, what they call a “strategic plan” lacks real strategic thought.

How Missteps Occur

If you’ve ever reviewed a company’s strategic plan, you’ve likely seen a list of ambitious goals. They may be grouped in catchy ways, but as you read through, doubts surface. Why?

You sense the organization may lack the resources or focus to achieve all these objectives simultaneously. The longer the list, the more you suspect it may be abandoned when daily issues arise, with lofty goals slipping out of view.

Redefining “Strategic”

One way to prevent this common pitfall is to rethink how we use the term “strategic.” Today, the label “strategic” is often used casually to signal importance, so much so that it’s lost its impact, and audiences tune it out.

This isn’t just a communication issue. When teams invest time in a strategic retreat, they expect the final plan to be truly strategic, yet often that’s not the case.

Typical brainstorming sessions encourage a mix of ideas and positive intentions without much structure. The result is often an extensive report of hopeful outcomes, which can look similar to other plans within the industry—ultimately, another reason for failure.

Enter the Strategy Triad

Peter Compo’s book *The Emergent Strategy* introduces a helpful redefinition of “strategic” by proposing a triad approach:

1. Aspiration: A meaningful, challenging goal that requires effort and won’t happen automatically.

2. Bottleneck: The main obstacle preventing the organization from achieving its aspiration(s).

3. Guiding Principle: A decision-making rule to help navigate actions that address the bottleneck.

Consider a store aiming to increase profits. If the biggest bottleneck is low brand recognition, the guiding principle could be to improve brand awareness through multiple channels—online, in-store, and through partnerships.

Applying the Strategy Triad

At a recent strategic planning retreat, a leadership team was challenged to apply the triad. Initially, it was difficult; identifying bottlenecks from new perspectives required collaboration and creativity, especially without cross-functional data, which led them to rely on firsthand experiences. Yet, they successfully defined bottlenecks and guiding principles that empowered employees to align their daily choices with the strategic plan. This alignment is what leaders want but is often rare.

Why Alignment is Rare

Leadership teams often avoid the challenging, healthy conflict required to build a robust strategy triad. They may take the easier path, creating lists of goals rather than diving into critical strategic planning. Alternatively, when discussions become too heated, leaders may intervene prematurely, cutting off debate and limiting essential buy-in.

To achieve meaningful alignment, it’s important to work through differing viewpoints until agreement is reached. Though challenging, this process builds the intellectual and emotional commitment needed for successful execution. By persevering through difficult conversations, leaders can significantly improve their strategic plans’ success and longevity.
