Jamaican Online Shoppers concerned with Amazon’s Free Shipping Increase

Published

on

Online shopping giant Amazon is expected to see a decrease in purchases from local shoppers following its move to silently increase its qualifying price for free shipping.

Over the weekend, Amazon quietly raised its free shipping minimum from US $35 to US $49 before tax for non-prime members.

The move is seen as a push toward the company’s US $99 per year Prime Membership which offers free two day shipping.

However, taking to local social media network twitter yesterday afternoon, Jamaican online shoppers say they are concerned as this means they will no longer benefit from the Di Minimis rate offered by Jamaica Customs for online purchases under US$50.

This follows statements by Commissioner of Customs Major Richard Reese last year that the Di Minimis rate is not up for review until June, with little to no expectation that it will be increased.

While it proves disadvantageous to local online shoppers, for Amazon, the move is expected to cut its shipping costs and increase its profit margins.
