Jamaica is now ranked 59th out of 144 nations in the 2015 Forbes Best Countries for Business Report.
Making the announcement during Friday’s opening of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Company, Sutherland Global Services New Kingston, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller said Jamaica remains as the top country in the Caribbean region to do business.
The country moved up five places from a ranking of 64th in the 2014 Report.
Simpson Miller says the country’s performance can be attributed to, among other things, the Government’s passage of new laws to encourage businesses, as well as the general improvement in the macroeconomic environment.
The ranking was based on 11 different factors including: property rights, innovation, taxes, technology, corruption, freedom (personal, trade and monetary), red tape, investor protection and stock market performance. Forbes said each category was equally weighted.
The report was also compiled using published reports, including the World Bank’s Doing Business Report and the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report.BM
