Fujitsu Caribbean, the Mona School of Business Management (MSBM) and Digicel have walked away from the Project Management of the Year Awards with the top prizes for what the Project Management Institute (PMI) Jamaica Chapter describes as their “impeccable project management skills”.
At last week’s celebration of International Project Management (IPM) Day, the top award of Project Management Organization of the Year (PMOY) was presented to Fujitsu Caribbean for their Digicel Jamaica Number Portability Gateway project. Following in second place was MSBM for their Financial Lab 2015 and then Digicel for their Number Portability in Jamaica project. According to the PMI, the PMOY award recognized exceptional project management performance by any company that has completed at least one project between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. Companies were graded on areas of organizational maturity; project management training and development; use of tools and techniques; application of the principles and practices of project management; number of certified members and overall project performance.
Meanwhile, presenting the keynote at the event, Entrepreneur Program Manager at the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship, Lisandra Rickards said there was a need to understand underlying motivations when choosing a career path, so that chosen careers are aligned with who we are and what we care about. She says “choosing a path that is not a good match for your key drivers will lead to frustration.”
Going further, Rickards says in looking at the personality traits of entrepreneurs and project managers, The Branson Centre Caribbean studies see that entrepreneurs are big-picture thinkers who prefer independence and freedom from rigid structure, while project managers are structured, more attentive to detail, and tend to be risk-averse. She says a “business venture needs both idea generators and project implementers to have the best chance of success”. BM
