Mobile Transformation Beyond COVID-19

Chinese technology giant Huawei started a four-day online event on July 27th, focusing on how technology can be used in the fight against the coronavirus.

On day one, The “Better World Summit” explored how to boost the world economy in the wake of the pandemic, one such way of mobile transformation beyond Covid-19. The world’s biggest telecoms equipment maker featured talks by technology industry executives and experts from around the world, including that of Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer at GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications).

According to Mr. Sinclair, “throughout this crisis, the mobile industry has shown that connectivity has never been more important. Connecting individuals, businesses, and infrastructure has enabled individuals to continue to live and work in new ways, bringing a new awareness of the power and potential of a digitally enabled world”.

With half of humanity subject to lockdown measures in 2020, the matter of connectivity is at the forefront, to ensure the functioning of emergency services, telemedicine, and remote education to name just a few. The pandemic has proven that people and businesses are better off when they are digitally fluent, equipped and connected.  Sinclair stated that instead of grinding to a halt during the lockdown, many sectors, could and did carry on with a large part of their workforce working from home. “Now more than ever connectivity is key. The mobile industry is a key part of the connectivity story, of course. Connecting 67 per cent of the global population and connect even more people to broadband internet than landline connections. The pandemic has proven that digital infrastructure must be resilient and able to withstand unexpected stresses, as indeed it has been throughout the crisis”, he stated.

Building back better

 In accordance with Alex Sinclair, bouncing back from the crises has to be a collective effort towards a greener, fairer digital economy, and society. While the unemployment numbers around the world increase, we need to be looking at the growth opportunities a digitized, greener economy present.

 As reported by Sinclair, for countries striving to recover from the economic impact of the virus, digital ambitions are more pressing than ever. “Deployment of 5G networks must remain at the forefront of recovery plans, as this next-gen technology will stimulate digital growth and innovation and new levels of efficiency across industries”. Sinclair continued to reassure that the rollout of 5G will drive future innovation and economic growth, delivering greater societal benefit and enabling new digital services and business models.

“The pandemic has proven mobiles ability to help during a global crisis and 5G will enable technology to tackle the world’s biggest challenges, such as climate change”, he remarked.

“Companies will be evaluated by how they address those challenges in their businesses.

If the past is any indication, sustainability will remain a top priority even as companies focus on survival. To address these barriers, mobile operators are continuing to work with the ecosystem as a whole, including vertical sectors, governments and civil society organizations to ensure everyone has access to the unparalleled value that mobile can bring to communities and the global economy through access to life-enhancing services and business opportunities”, Sinclair ended.

COVID has shaken the world, causing us all to reflect on our values and responsibilities in an interconnected global society. Positive change is needed on many fronts, and this requires shared intent and coordinated effort from government, regulators, industry, international organizations, and civil society.
