New state of the art business incubator, The Business District, District360, hosted its official opening ceremony on Cargil Avenue on Thursday. The new location is set to assist companies of all ages and sizes to be more efficient through the available access of business support and services.
The team held a lively opening ceremony on property where guests were greeted with refreshments to lighten the mood before the proceedings. Chairman and Director, Joy Schaaffe, who moderated the event, did a hearty introduction for the Executive Chairman, Maria Jones. Maria dedicated the building to her late husband, Professor Edwin Jones, who died during the construction of the site in March 2021. Professor Jones was an instrumental figure and thought catalyst in the development of the Business District 360 project and Maria thought it fitting to arrange a formal dedication in this way. She thanked her staff and other distinguished guests for their support and attendance.
Director, Novlet Palmer Mattis delivered the formal dedication speech in honor of Professor Edwin Jones.
“I feel so honored and blessed to dedicate this amazing building and the expansion of the business district to the life and legacy of Professor Edwin Jones. Professor Jones was in the Business District venture with his wife, Maria where he served as Chairman of the board. He took his board responsibilities and duties very seriously. He was always fully present and prepared. He also ensured we started on time all the time, he did not do the Jamaican time business,” said Mattis as she chuckled at the memory.
Professor Edwin Jones was a principled man who listened to everyone and was an avid follower of current affairs and topics relevant to the business. He ensured that the team would “always remember the community that they served” and challenged the staff to always maintained sound knowledge of their competition. The dedication ended with a heartfelt prayer offering protection over the building and words of thanks for Professor Jones’ contribution to the project.
The dedication was followed by the unveiling and reading of the plaque by Former Governor General, Sir Kenneth Hall and Director, Trudy Belnavis, which reads.
“This building is dedicated to the memory of Professor Edwin Samuel Jones PHD. OJCD. Chairman Business District Limited. March 1993.”

District 360, is run by the Corporate Operations Manager, Tricia Burgess and Branch Manager, Maxine Foreman who did the ribbon cutting which marks the symbol of the official opening of the building. After which guests were invited for a private tour of the facility and invited for cocktails on the balcony of the D360 Café.
District360 boasts 8,000 square footage of furnished offices, co working space and storage pods, amongst its other business offerings. The purpose-built site also provides virtual offices and virtual administrative support.
The Business District is a community-centric collective of associate businesses and professionals that benefit from business cross-fertilization and derive lower costs by sharing resources and facilities. According to Maria Jones, Executive Chairman of The Business District, TBD is a fully serviced office business of which co working is a feature.
“The onset of the pandemic, within Jamaica, in 2020 brought with it a period of great uncertainty. With the traditional way of work being curtailed and controlled along with the mass shift to work from home being more widespread and accepted. There was a question of would the demand for serviced office spaces decline? The realities of the pandemic required me to channel a greater level of tenacity and continued focus, believing that our value proposition, that was groundbreaking over 10 years ago, would continue to flourish despite the economic and social challenges. These concerns combined with my own personal challenges made the completion of the additional office space on 16 Cargill Avenue, in February 2022, a greater accomplishment,” Jones explained. The Business District currently has two locations – Old Hope Road and now, Cargill Avenue. The new District 360 location boasts dedicated ‘children – friendly’ spaces while you work, secure storage pods for long- and short-term rentals, 24/7 property security, equipment rental (projectors, laptops, tvs, etc), serviced spaces, wired and wireless internet, PBX system and courier services. The future of work is open.
